EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY

There are various traditional media forms through which the people of Nigeria were communicating with one another prior to the advent of the colonial press. Traditional media such as talking drum, folk music, folk tales, mobile theaters, festivals etc. are deployed in hegemonic contests between thee authoritarian state and surbordinates challenging its hegemony. In the beginning, the Nigerian press owed its birth to the missionary and philanthropic influences with the primary aim of inculcating western values through the spread of education. Following the abolition of slave trade in the 19th century was the growth, along with missionary activities, of what the erstwhile slave trading nations now called the "legitimate trade", the trade in agricultural raw materials that now fed the industries of Europe. The missionaries saw it as their divine duty to see to the full implementation of abolition, and one way to do this was by converting both the freed slaves and the natives to Christianity.
